"People who are anxious to bring on war don't know what they are bargaining for; they don't see all the horrors that must accompany such an event."

--Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson

"Captain Smith sprang to his side, and as he raised his head a bright beam of moonlight made its way through the thick foliage and rested upon the pale face of the sufferer. The captain was startled by its great pallor and stillness, and cried out: "Oh! General, are you seriously hurt?"

"No," he answered, "don't trouble yourself, my friend, about me;" [17]

Mr. Filzen,

This is an excellent blog site and I sure hope all your students are enjoying it. I particularly enjoyed the post on Stonewall Jackson. He, James Longstreet and Robert E. Lee are my favorite Generals to study. I have visited Lexington, VA (just 60 miles or so south of where I live in Woodstock)two different times. You can spend a whole day there as this is where Jackson taught at VMI before he went off to war. Also, equally interesting this is where Robert E. Lee spent his post Civil War years as President of Washington (now Washington and Lee) College.

Within 20 miles of my home are the New Market, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek battlefields. Come on down and tour them with me someday! If any of your students have questions on Civil War history in this area .... blog away!
